Last December, our Cardiac Rehab team and Wellness coordinator Eric Siebenmorgen challenged us with “The 12 days of Fitmas” to help us get ready for the holidays. I decided to give it a try. At first I thought “what did I get myself into?”, but at the end of the three weeks I was so glad I gave it a try. I noticed a change in my breathing as well as a drop in my blood pressure which had also been a problem area as well. There were several of us in the class and Eric did a fantastic job of working with each of us to find a regimen that worked best for us… I am better physically, mentally and spiritually as a result of my time in this program. I believe wellness is wholistic, involving the body, mind and spirit. I challenge our staff to take advantage of this wonderful benefit made available to us by the Heart Hospital leadership. After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in Dec 2021. I decided to “Do you in 2022”. My goal was to get my levels down below the type 2 threshold. I had seen my physician and their dietitian on staff but also wanted to get another opinion on how to best tackle this. I reached out to Eric and had a nutrition consultation. I tracked my food intake and then went over some of my dietary flaws. He gave me options but after a couple of weeks of getting burnt out on salads/veggies I asked for some more hot meal options,and he quickly got me some low carb and easy one pan meals so I could alternate and not burn out. I also started the Strong Hearts strength training with Brittany 2 days (530AM) and continued my 5Ks and hikes as well. With these new changes I was able to reduce my A1C down to 5.9 in 6 months and have lost some weight as well. I continue the lifestyle changes and hope to continue to lower my A1C and see more weight loss. The Strongheart team have been a great encouragers and have motivated me through this journey.
